Persons placed in immigration detention have the following rights:
- They have the right to be informed of the reasons for their detention.
- They have the right to gain access to an officer of the Canada Border Services Agency.
- They are to be informed of their right to be represented by a lawyer and to meet with that person confidentially.
- They have the right to gain access to a representative of their country’s embassy or consulate, or of an organization like the United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees.
- They have the right to the services of an interpreter if they are not fluent in English or French.
- They have the right to receive medical attention.
- They have the right to practise their religion.
Special consideration is given to vulnerable persons, including minors, pregnant or nursing women, trafficked persons and persons who have a medical condition, a mental illness, restricted mobility or a disability.
